As you move the slider, the image is rotated in real time about it's center whilst maintaining it's proportions. Clicking the markers for 0, 90, 180, 270 & 360° will rotate the image to that angle instantly.

You can also manually enter a value in the rotation value box next to the 360° marker.

Note that when the image file cannot be found, media view mode will just show the thumbnail instead.
